One Hundred Years of Political Theatre
Eastenders' Fifth Annual One-Act Festival
Runs August 31-September 26, 2004
at the Eureka Theatre
215 Jackson Street, San Francisco

What is "political theatre?" It's a loaded term, often associated with agit-prop or heavy-handed proselytizing. And though some playwrights balk at the label "political theatre," they do seem to agree on one thing: live theatre can make people think about things differently, even perhaps change an audience's mind or dispel a prejudice. While Eastenders cannot begin to encompass the infinite variety of theatre that has, in one way or another, been categorized as political over the last 100 years, we can answer the question, "why political theatre, for us, for our fifth festival?" We chose the plays in this festival because they are supremely well-crafted theatre. They stand outside their time. They demand that we engage with the world. We need theatre like this now.
