100 Years of Political Theatre

The Retreating World

By Naomi Wallace

Directed by Robert A. Zick, Jr.

at the Eureka
215 Jackson Street, San Francisco

August 31-September 26, 2004

Eastenders Repertory Company presents The Retreating World
Part of Series C of 100 Years of Political Theatre.

The Retreating World is a poetic monologue delivered by a young Iraqi man - a pigeon "fancier" and lover of books - who fought in Saddam's army in the last Gulf War.

"Absolutely compelling theatre" - Evening Standard; "the theatrical event of my week. It brings home the meaning of war, makes it personal, refuses to let it slip into unreality...a taut, beautifully written elegy and it reaches out to us now like a prophecy" - The Observer; "the kind of short, stark and simple play that reminds us why we need theatre at a time like this, what the playwright can achieve that the journalist cannot" - The Guardian
